How do you import video from a camera onto the computer?

I have a Panasonic video camera and i need to import the video for a project. Problem is, i dont know how. I’ve got the firewire hooked up and everything, but i dont know how. I also have Windows Movie Maker but I still dont know how to import. Can someone help?
