2 Red Light Error - Do Something About It Before It Is Too Late
If you have an Xbox 360 that flashes the two red light error, get to the bottom of this problem quickly because you are facing a severe overheating problem.
Overheating is a very serious issue. There are only so many times that your Xbox can overheat before permanent damage sets in. The 3 red light error or red ring of death can sometimes follow repeated overheating. If this should happen to you, then your console most certainly has been damaged.
Two very basic causes for an overheating Xbox are:
1.) The console is being misused.
The consoles operating environment as well as your gaming habits will have to be changed. In order for its fans to properly function, the console must be placed in a well ventilated area.
Therefore the immediate environment next to the fan intakes is very important. It must be free of any clutter. This also means that placing the console inside an enclosure is out of the question.
Take care that there are no sources of heat nearby. An example of this might be a hot stove or a heater. Some heat sources can be easily overlooked such as other electronics that are too close or direct sunlight. Keep the power supply on a hard surface. The cooling fans can’t function properly unless the power supply is working properly.
The Xbox will also overheat if you use it too much. Turn it off for a while and let it cool off. Don’t use your Xbox more than two hours at a time.
2.) Your Xbox is damaged in some way.
This means that a component is malfunctioning in some way. Remember to try the previous suggestions on the proper use of your console before using the advice in this section. You do not want to spend money on an unneeded repair job.
Overheating can be caused by the following hardware issues:
A.) The cooling fans are weak.
Replace if this is the case.
B.) The thermal paste on the CPU or GPU has dried out.
Thermal paste or thermal compound connects the CPU and GPU to their respective heat sinks. If the thermal compound dries out, thermal conduction gets impaired and excess heat cannot be drawn out of the GPU or CPU by the heat sinks.
C.) There is a severe dust buildup on the electronics inside the console.
Unlike cleaning out dust from the vents, this will require opening up the Xbox to allow access to the internal electronics. Since dust buildup is a slow process, this won’t be an issue for a new Xbox.
